It's the season for giving and we're feeling generous! We've just got back from Patagonia and Galapagos and we've crammed this newsletter with a FREE tutorial by Jonathan Ives on using filters to take GREAT photos; a FREE Christmas giveaway; some wonderful Xmas gift ideas; a new lens review and more. Wishing you a wonderful Christmas and a suitably productive start to 2014 - thanks very much for your support!

FREE TUTORIAL - Using filters to take great photos!
Have you ever been out photographing when another photographer turns up and starts screwing random filters onto their lenses, or slipping semi-transparent squares in front? What do all these filters do? How do you use them? And most frustratingly of all, “How come my photos don’t look like that?” The ability to confidently and successfully utilise filters is definitely a skill worth having. Click here to read the tutorial and find out how to include these weapons in your photographic arsenal...

Oh and don't forget we have a collection of other free tutorials online including how to shoot a time lapse, how to photograph star trails, how to use and control your flash and how to 'paint' with light when taking long exposures - something that might come in handy this Christmas. Everyone loves Christmas lights!
We often use the Aussie company Momento to make super high-quality, coffee-table style photo books. Photo books make for great Christmas gifts because they’re loved by all, they’re fun to make, and they’re a gift-that-keeps-on-giving - allowing you to re-live and share your trips and memories.
Simply CLICK HERE to visit the competition on our Facebook page. All you have to do is leave a comment describing what you'd feature in your Momento photo book if you won. Good luck!
SAFARI IN FOCUS - Picture Perfect Patagonia

Positioning the boat to get you breaching Southern Right Whales against the sunset, gaining special access to curious Rockhopper and Magellanic penguin breeding sites, special permits to get right down amongst the belching Elephant Seals, not to mention Armadillos, Guanakos, sea lions and more – our first ever Patagonian Photo Safari was an absolute cracker - so we’re going back for more in November 2014 and 2015!

Who want’s to come in 2014 or 2015? Check out the new dates and itinerary online!

Here’s what one of our clients had to say:

“What an AMAZING two weeks! Just stunning – there are no words to describe it. Everyone should come – it’s such a great country, and Chris and Jess are just amazing people! Thanks again guys!” Catherine Starkey
It's sometimes hard to figure out what to get some people for Christmas! To help you out, we've compiled a list of photography-related items that your friends or family might like (or perhaps that you could add to your own wish list!)

1) Polarising Filter
As discussed in the new tutorial, polarising filters are used to limit polarised light entering your camera lens. They allow you to remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass. They also enable colours to become more saturated and appear clearer, with better contrast. When it comes to selecting a filter, there are a range of options. Just make sure you get the appropriate size for your lens and be aware that you get what you pay for. Cheaper filters may not give you the sharpness you desire. DCW stock a large range, check them out!

2) Photon Micro-Light II - $22 (only through us!)
As explained in a previous 'Painting with Light' tutorial, these awesome little LED lights are perfect for light drawings, creating orbs of light, etc. They feature a convenient squeeze/release ON/OFF switch for easy 'drawing with light', and also a separate permanent ON/OFF switch for things like 'light orbs'. They retail at about $35 AU (eg here), but since we had an overwhelming response last year, we've actually bought another whole stockpile for you for Christmas and can sell them BRAND NEW in the box for just $22 (Includes FREE POSTAGE within Australia) Good times! They are available in Blue, Green, White, Red and Yellow, and are so reliable that they've been selected for NASA missions! ORDER BEFORE FRIDAY 13th DECEMBER FOR AUSTRALIAN PRE-XMAS DELIVERY!

3) DJI 'Phantom' Drone for GoPro - $728
I've hovered it above a river-delta filled with grizzly bears catching salmon in Alaska, lowered it down beside giant Nile crocodiles and elephants in Africa, filmed surfers, even launched it from my sailing boat to film some expensive-looking helicopter fly-pasts at sea! With inbuilt GPS and a range of 300m, this incredibly stable, easy to fly DJI 'Phantom' quadrocopter creates endless possibilities for capturing unique perspectives. An even newer model has just been released, but this will set you back about twice as much... but it comes with an inbuilt camera and lots of additional features not available in the previous model.

4) Velbon Sherpa 4430D Tripod - $176
This is a sturdy and affordable tripod made from lightweight aluminum, with 4-section adjustable legs standing up to 151.9cm tall yet still packs down into just 47.5cm. The easy-to-use ball-and-socket head holds a DSLR with ease (up to 3.5kg) and provides easy movement for panning and tilting. Of course it has a quick-release plate too, making it quick and easy to attach your camera. We like them so much we've just bought a whole batch to use on our courses, and you can buy yours through us for $176 (Includes FREE POSTAGE within Australia). ORDER BEFORE FRIDAY 13th DECEMBER FOR AUSTRALIAN PRE-XMAS DELIVERY!

5) Joby Ballhead X - $79
Designed for heavy camera rigs with large zoom lenses, this tripod head holds up to 5kg, has a quick release plate for easy set up and can position your camera at virtually any angle with its 360 deg pan and 90 deg tilt ball head. Digital Camera Warehouse stock this beauty. Check it out.

6) CBP 1 Day Photography Course (Gift certificate) - $480
Held at zoos and other amazing venues all around Australia, our 1 day photography courses are the fastest way to understand the incredible creative potential of a DSLR camera. Composition, Aperture, Exposure Compensation, Lighting, Lenses, Histograms - everything you need to know! 7) Lowepro Nova Sport AW Shoulder bag
The Nova Sport AW Series is the ideal photo enthusiast's shoulder bag. It's versatile, well organized, weather-protective and comes in a range of sizes (7L, 17L, 35L). They've also made it practical with a removable camera insert to expand your carrying options which also means you can create space for fitting your other devices, like a laptop - pretty handy for flights or day trips!

8) Canon Speedlight Flash - $326
In a first for Canon Speedlites, the versatile new Speedlite 320EX features an LED light on the front of the flash body that can be used to illuminate nearby subjects in dim light. The light is handy for video recording but can also be used to help your camera Auto Focus in low light or in Live View shooting. Overall the flash is lightweight, pocket-sized, easy to operate and recharges silently in approximately 2 seconds - just about all you want in a flash.

9) Momento Photo book voucher
Momento photo books, calendars and diaries make priceless Christmas gifts. They’re loved by all, fun to make, customisable, and the receiver will enjoy their printed memories for years to come. They also have gift vouchers available (see our Christmas giveaway competition)! Momento Gift Vouchers are perfect for the happy snapper in your life. Let them have fun turning their photos into a photo book, calendar or diary. Download the software, view video tutorials and be inspired by Momento Christmas.

10) Led lenser SEO rechargeable head torch - $109.95 (only through us!)
We personally recommend (and use) the brand LED Lenser as they make wonderfully reliable, powerful, cutting-edge technology torches and head torches that we have used around the world. Their 'SEO' range of head torches are awesomely small, light and bright. The best of these is their SEO7R: USB rechargeable, exceptionally bright, focusable, dimmable, and has a red LED mode to maintain your night-vision. We've organised a special discount deal with the importer which we can pass on to you, letting you buy yours through us for just $109.95 which is $30 BELOW retail price, and (includes FREE POSTAGE within Australia!) Merry Christmas ;) Note - If you need delivery outside Australia, we will bill you seperately and cannot guarantee pre-xmas delivery. ORDER BEFORE FRIDAY 13th DECEMBER FOR AUSTRALIAN PRE-XMAS DELIVERY!
GEAR TEST - Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x

It’s hard to justify $12,000 in just 200 words, but having used Canon’s new longest zoom lens every day in Patagonia and Galapagos for the last month, it’s my new favorite lens! Able to scroll down to f/4 all the way from 200-400mm, it’s giving me staggeringly sharp images with beautifully blurred backgrounds, and best of all, a simple flip of a lever engages an internal 1.4x tele-extender, turning it into a 280-560mm f/5.6, still with L-series clarity, weather sealing etc!

Compared to the 2-stops of stabilizing on my trusty old 100-400mm, this lens boasts 4-stops (the equivalent of multiplying your shutter-speed by a whopping 16x, so a sluggish 1/100th sec is as steady as 1/1,600th sec!) amazingly allowing me to hand-hold this lens the entire time - though weighing 3.6Kgs, my arms were sore for the first few days! Its twist-zoom doesn’t suck in dust like the 100-400mm, and has better weather sealing. It’s AF is wonderfully swift and quiet, min focus distance of just 2m, and with other fancy features like Power Focus (smooth motorized focus-pull for videos), this lens really leaves nothing to be desired – yes it’s very expensive, but for what I do, it’s the best lens money can buy.
We’ve been recommending Craghoppers clothing to photographers for years and our safari-goers have been loving them! Great, lightweight, durable, comfortable gear with lots of pockets AND inbuilt permanent mosquito repellent!

We’ve negotiated a discount deal for you guys to buy these amazing Craghoppers products, and other more casual tops, through us (cheaper than RRP!!) with our cool new CBP logo neatly embroidered above the pocket! To have it delivered before Christmas, fill in the order form and email it back to us by the 8th December.

THERE’S NO BETTER WAY TO IMPROVE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY than on one of our unforgettable private, small-group photo safaris, surrounded by amazing subjects 24/7, under the guidance of pro photographers.

We’ve got 1 spot available for our ‘1 Week on Christmas Island - Australia's Best Kept Secret (22nd to 29th May, 2014). Christmas Island is a stunning tropical paradise, overflowing with so many endemic species that it's often referred to as 'The Galapagos of the Indian Ocean'.

Our premium ‘Africa's Great Migration (Kenya)' safari (20th-3rd Nov/Oct 2014) still has spots available. Fly into Luxury tented camps, indulge yourself with gourmet food and photograph the ‘Big Five’ during this once-in-a-life time event as millions of Wildebeest and Zebras migrate south.

Who knew the best of Australia could all exist on ‘Kangaroo Island! Photograph sea lions, dolphins, birdlife, rock formations, caves, seascapes, koalas, kangaroos and more on this ultimate photography itinerary from 22nd – 27th of October, or 29th – 3rd November 2014.

And soon we’ll be announcing the new dates for Patagonia 2014 and 2015, Alaska 2015, and an excitingly re-vamped Galapagos program, now including Hummingbirds and an Amazon trip all combined!
