Lowepro giveaways, free tickets, star trail tutorial, discounts, gear tests and more!

Welcome - Newsletter #1 - October 2012

Here's our very first e-newsletter from Chris Bray Photography (CBP), filled with heaps of awesome free stuff including Lowepro giveaways, gear tests, free tickets, discounts, cool photo tutorials, photo competition news & more! We really hope you'll enjoy these every month or so!

HOW TO SHOOT STAR TRAILS: They look awesome and they're easy - all you need is a clear night, a tripod, a rubber band and a pencil - oh, and a bit of insomnia helps too! Here's how to do it - step by step - including stuff like focusing, working out the settings, using bulb-mode without a fancy plug-in timer, finding the south celestial pole for those spiral star shots, and even a comparison between doing one long exposure vs stacking heaps of shorter ones! Read my guide!
DIGITAL CAMERA WAREHOUSE TRIPOD DISCOUNT: How good is this!? DCW (who've been supporting my photo courses for years and giving you those free lens-cloths) have offered to help you guys take those star-trail photos by giving you a special tripod discount only for us CBP subscribers! =) It's for the tripod that I use, the Manfrotto 394 tripod with ball headand providing you write that you “heard about this offer through Chris Bray” when you buy it online, or mention the same over the phone, they'll knock $22 off, bringing it down from $143 to $121. Enjoy! (Note: for web orders, it will 'appear' as if you're being billed the full price, but providing you mention me in the web order form, your card will actually only be charged the discounted price, promise!) We like helping DCW as they have good prices, great stock levels, real shop fronts and warranties!
KRISTMAS IN KENYA? What are your plans for Xmas this year? Same as usual? Seriously? Come spend it with us! Christmas sunrise will spill across our little group on the African savannah as we photograph herds of elephants grazing in front of the iconic snow-capped plateau of Mount. Kilimanjaro. Then it's into our chartered planes across the Great Rift Valley and down to our lakeside accommodation for Christmas Lunch followed by a doors-off flight low over a lake filled with pink flamingos for your very own 'Out of Africa' movie experience! After dinner, come for a wander along the banks spotlighting for hippos and crocodiles to photograph! And that's just Christmas Day - New Years Eve will be a treat, as will every other day on this 'Ultimate Africa 2-week photo safari tour' starting on 23rd December. Only 3 places left, $9,995 p/p and it's first in, first served, so email us ASAP! The second trip, 6-19th Jan has already sold-out.
FREE TICKETS - NAT GEO PHOTOGRAPHER ANNIE GRIFFITHS: She's one of Nat Geo's first women photographers, has worked in over 100 countries across 6 continents, and is coming to the Sydney Opera House on 18th November to present her experiences “A camera, two kids and a camel” - and I've organised a free double pass to give away, worth $80+! Just hop on our CBP Facebook Page, find the post about this giveaway, write as a comment why you want to go, and 'share' it, and we'll pick the winner on Monday 5th November. Good luck!
FREE FEATURE ARTICLES: Not sure if any of you saw them, but recently I had a bunch of different articles published, and now that the magazine's have moved on, you can read them free online! There's my 8-page feature in Digital Photography magazine (with lots of low-light tips), a 3-page feature in Better Photography (including the cover shot), and a nice interview in Australian Geographic Outdoor (where I answer intriguing questions like “What keeps me up at night?”). Enjoy!
GEAR TEST - Lowepro Flipside Sport 15L AW: I thought these new bags sounded great, so I borrowed one from my mates at Lowepro a few months back and thoroughly used and abused it everywhere from the Arctic to Kangaroo Island - and now I don't want to give it back! It's wonderfully small, light and comfy, yet I can somehow wedge my 1D mk IV body with a 100-400mm attached, my trusty 24-105mm, 16-35mm wide, and even my 100mm macro into the padded interior which entirely lifts out, converting it into a normal backpack! It's got a good zippered pouch on one side for any extras (designed for a water-bladder), and on the other, a wrap-and-click flap to snugly encapsulate my tripod (or my jumper/raincoat, whatever). And, being a 'Flipside' means it's got that super-handy access system that lets me rotate the bag 'round in front to rummage & swap lenses without having to put it down on the ground. You can read it's specs here, but basically, it retails at $179 and I've convinced Lowepro to give me one, to give to you! See the competition below! =)
WE'RE ON TV! Not sure if you've been following our recent 2-year arctic sailing adventure where Jess and I became the youngest couple (and I the youngest captain) to ever sail the notorious Northwest Passage over the top of Canada, but if you missed our 5-minute segment on Ch 7's 'Sunrise' program entitled “World's most romantic marriage proposal?” you can watch it online here. Also, Ch 7's '60-minute' style program 'Sunday Night' has done a big feature on us due to air this Sunday at 6:30PM if you're keen. (If not this Sunday then the next!) We can't wait!
ANZANG PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION: Our region's premiere wildlife & environment photo competition is open to images shot in Australia, NZ, Antarctica and PNG, and this year's top images - including the $5,000 winning photo shot by our good friend Wayne Osborn - are on display around the country (Adelaide's SA Museum and others). Well worth a look, and start thinking about what you're going to submit when entries open January 2013. And, just quietly, things are about to get a whole lot bigger with ANZANG next year with an exciting partnership with Australian Geographic to be announced soon! Stay tuned!

CAMERA NEWS - Canon EOS 6D: Have you heard about this new little powerhouse!? Pitched at 'budget-minded photographers who are eager to step up into the world of full-frame imaging', the little Canon EOS 6D boats an awesome 20.2 megapixel full-frame sensor, an ISO that goes up to an unbelievable 25,600 (which is actually higher than my 1D mk IV!!!), inbuilt GPS, 4.5 fps continuous shooting, and films 1080p30 full HD video. It's also Canon's first DSLR to include wi-fi which not only lets you transfer pics wirelessly to your computer, printer etc, but using Canon's EOS Remote smartphone app, lets you control the camera remotely, with full live-view and exposure settings! It seems like it'll cost around the $2,200-ish mark but official prices have not been released yet. Stock is due to hit stores at the end of November!
THE BEST WAY TO IMPROVE: There is no better way to perfect your photography than on an unforgettable holiday, surrounded by amazing subjects in a small group of similarly enthused photographers on one of our photo safari tours. No more groaning fellow-travellers who just want to keep moving - with us, you'll be feeding off each other's creativity, making great friends, borrowing gear and learning new skills all under the expert guidance of Jess and I who work flat-out to help YOU get to the most photogenic locations, at the best time of year, to capture your own stunning collection of wall-hanging memories! Where do you want to go? KENYA, TASMANIA, GALAPAGOS, PATAGONIA? See our Photo Safari Tour Page for details.
NEW 1 DAY PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE DATES: Keen to unleash the creative potential of your DSLR in one amazing day? My courses at zoos and other awesome venues all around Australia sell out fast, so read some reviews, watch our new promo-video, book early and don't miss out! We do gift certificates too, as unlocking your camera makes for an unforgettable gift that keeps on giving! Adelaide (3, 4 November - that's THIS WEEKEND, places available! & 23, 24 March 2013), Brisbane (10, 11 Nov & 16, 17 March 2013), Sydney (15, 16, 17, 18 Feb 2013), Melbourne (21, 22, 24, 25 Feb 2013), Perth (1, 2, 3, 4 March 2013). Book online.
LOWEPRO GIVEAWAY! So I mentioned to Lowepro that I was going to rave about how much I've been loving their new Flipside Sport 15L AW in this e-newsletter, and asked if they'd like to give you guys one, and they agreed! Score! For your chance to win, all you have to do is go to our CBP Facebook Page, find my post about this giveaway, comment briefly under it why you want this bag, and then lastly you must also click 'Share' to help us spread the word about our Facebook group, which I genuinely hope is a worthwhile community to be a part of - a place to ask questions, get feedback and tips, keep up to date, be inspired and share enthusiasm. I'll pick the most worthy winner on Monday 12th November. Good luck!
