Our World Underwater Scholarship

This is just a quick post to congratulate William Arlidge, a 23 year old marine biologist from New Zealand, for becoming the 'Our World-Underwater Scholarship Australasian Rolex Scholar' for 2010/11! On the weekend I was part of a panel of six people forming the selection committee, interviewing the 5 finalists, and William was a stand-out, and will i'm sure be an amazing ambassador for the program for years to come! Good on you! I look forward to following your experiences over the coming...READ MORE >>

I've just launched the website www.YachtTeleport.com for my next series of adventures where Jess and I will start to sail our little 29 foot junk rig yacht home from Halifax, Canada, over the top through the Northwest Passage, Siberia etc. Take a look at the website, sign up to the email news list to be kept in the loop! It's going to be pretty amazing. The basic summary is: Jess and I have bought a little wooden 29 foot junk-rig yacht called '...READ MORE >>

Me and Jessica Watson

Today I went to say Hi to Jessica Watson, the amazingly inspirational girl who's just about to set off to try and become the youngest person ever to sail single handed, nonstop around the world. She's only 16, but you'd never believe it after chatting with her - she's so calm, cool and collected, and fun! While we were chatting, who should stroll up but Dick Smith! Good on you Dick! He was dropping off a good luck charm and parting a few wise words of wisdom. Take a look at Jessica's websi...READ MORE >>

Introducing Australian Story  [15th Sep 09]

Australian Story - Murt and Mich Jenner

Lastnight's 'Australian Story' on ABC TV featured Curt and Mich Jenner - an amazing whale researching couple who are the latest to join the Australia & New Zealand chapter of The Explorers Club. As I am currently the chairman for this chapter, it was my honour to be asked by the ABC to introduce the story! The episode, called 'eye to eye' will be repeated at 12:30 PM this coming Saturday 19th Sept, and you can actually also watch the entire ...READ MORE >>

PAC1's Still Float!  [13th Sep 09]

Paddling back across Pittwater...

"Wow..." Our raised eyebrows said it all. To our great surprise, after digging out our old 2005 arctic expedition home-made aluminium wheeled kayaks from under the house and putting them in the water at Pittwater last week - not only did they float, but they barely even leaked! This bodes well for our upcoming 111km kayak marathon down the Hawkesbury River... After leaning heavily on them one at a time to coax water to trickle in through any holes, around which we drew with permanent marker ...READ MORE >>

Brisbane Writers Festival  [13th Sep 09]

L to R: Garry Weare, me, Andrew Westoll in our discussion pannel 'Moving on from the Boy Scounts' (not that I was ever in it).

This weekend I was fortunate enough to be a part of The Brisbane Writers Festival, flying up on Friday afternoon with Jess, and staying at the Mantra - quite a classy hotel in Southbank by the river. Following an evening of randomly bumping into good friends in the street and sampling various beers at various venues, and sitting in on some fascinating talks and discussions at the BWF, we called it a day and got some sleep, ready for Saturday. Saturday I started with hosting a 90-minute wor...READ MORE >>
